at they lived in the region until about the 12th or 13th century. At that time a cultural shift occurred and this portion of Southern Utah became home to the Southern Paiute. It is believed that the word 'Paiute' is translated either from the word 'Pah' (meaning water) or 'Pai' (meaning true) and 'Ute', whom are also indigenous people in the region. Kanab is the anglicized version of the Paiute word meaning "Place of the Willows".
